She wasn't a virgin. The good Lord gave her a holy screw which knocked her up with Jesus.
Julia, you're wrong. The burdon of proof rests squarely upon the shoulders of those who make the positive assertion. You say "Mary was a virgin". It's up to YOU to prove that what you've asserted is correct.
It would be a pretty wonky world if everything blurted out in a tone of certainty stood as fact until someone disproved it.

The key word is "Gullible", then and now judging by the answers today. Religion is a very big and profitable business and any story that helps to promote the business will be used, maintained and supported. Mary sells tons of Religious artifacts, reproductions and the like. Every time she makes an appearance even in a Pizza more converts are recorded. Of course she was a Virgin ask the infallible Pope.

As for why no other women ever experienced the Immaculate Conception, it's because only Jesus Christ was to be born this way.
The first Christians claimed Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary for a very good reason: They were absolutely convinced that it actually happened.
Remember, Mary expressed disbelief when the angel first told her what was about to happen. And yet the Bible's witness is clear: "The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you. ... So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God'" (Luke 1:35). Jesus' first followers knew His mother and His immediate family well, because they often followed Him from place to place. If the virgin birth was only a myth, those disciples would have known it, and neither they nor Mary would have allowed it to be proclaimed.
It's significant that the most thorough Gospel account of the virgin birth was written by Luke, who was a medical doctor. If anyone knew the impossibility of a virgin birth it was Luke—and yet, after careful research, he knew it was a fact. The God who was powerful enough to create the whole universe also was powerful enough to bring Jesus into the world without a human father.
You will only understand the virgin birth of Jesus when you understand who He was: the divine Son of God, sent from heaven to save us from our sins. His miraculous birth was a sign, pointing the way to our salvation. Why not put your life into His hands?

Many religions have legends of virgin births, Christianity is not alone. They were no more gullible than the people of today. The reason you see such a large upsurge in people questioning the voracity of the claims in the Bible is because we have the benefit of technology and have found writings 5500 years old. We have come a long way in our understanding of how things actually work since the Bible was written and the legends that seemed possible then seem ridiculous now. How many people would believe their wife if she said she was a virgin and pregnant today? How about someone parting a sea with his staff or walking on water or healing amputees? Everyone would want proof. Just keep in mind that almost all legends have truth buried in them, the difficulty is in finding it.

Culturally, women were not left to themselves or in the company of men. Further, she was probably young, maybe 15 or so. There is no proof that she was not a virgin.
How do you know people were gullible then, more so than today?
A virgin conceiving never happened after Mary because it was one of the ways that God set Jesus Christ apart from everyone else in history.

Actually, during those days, people were very much more concerned about virginity than we are today.
Mary was not even raised at her home after she was weaned. She was sent to the temple to live until she was old enough to start puberty. Girls could not live in the temples if they had reached puberty, because they were considered unclean during the menstral cycle.
Once her family knew that they needed to take her out of the temple, they married her off to Josheph. Now in those days, they were considered married at this point, but there was a one year period that Joseph had before he needed to take her as his consumated wife.
It was during this waiting period that Mary was found to be with child, and thus Joseph being a kind man and not one given to anger, was going to hide her away from public and divorce her privately. If he had wanted to, he could have had her stoned to death in public. Thats how important being a virgin was in those days.
Joseph received a visit from an angel of God, telling him to relax, Mary was still a virgin, the child she was carrying was the Messiah.
Joseph did not have to abide by the words of the angel. He chose to believe in his God and his word. So , he went and took Mary as his wife prior to the one year being up and raised the child as his own.
Further proof of her virginity can be found in the fact that her own parents could have also had her publically stoned to death for being found with child during the one year waiting period.
Why it has not happened since, God does not need to have it happen again. Our Messiah was born as the old testament prophecies were fulfilled. There are no more virginal births to fulfill.

There are many who believe the whole "virgin Mary" thing was the result of a translation error, that the word translated as "virgin" really only meant "a young (or an unmarried) woman." Mary was pregnant when she married Joseph. How she got pregnant is the heart of the matter.
It's all mythology, anyway, and things like this just illustrate how fictional this all is.

Mary: [about the Virgin Mary] I know this is wrong, but do you ever wonder if she just made the whole thing up? I mean, it's a pretty good one. It's not like anyone can ever use virgin birth as an excuse again.
[pause]
Mary: I don't really think she made it up, but I can understand why a girl would.

It is thought that in order for Mary to be holy enough to give birth to the Son of God, she had to be as pure as possible. She was concieved without sin (Immaculate Conception) and she had not yet known a man when she gave birth to Jesus.
Whether or not you believe she remained a virgin after that is up to you. She was married, after all.
A lot of women have remained virgins throughout their life since then. None of them were virgin MOTHERS, since God really hasn't needed to pull that one off again.

Mary is not literally a Virgin. Although she has recieved the nickname "Virgin Mary" because she did not conceive Jesus, Jesus had many brothers and sisters, not sons and daughters of God, that were conceived the old-fashioned way.
FYI... God told Mary that Jesus was the Savior and asked Mary to carry him... she of course said yes... she only carried Him for 6 months instead of the 9... I don't know of the theory why.
