religion is nothing more than a mind control device developed by man to brainwash and keep people in fear so they can reach deep in their pockets and make Jesus rich,
knowledge is religions greatest enemy.

in my opinion...
religion is junk. i say this because of this:
so how many religions are there? god only knows how many there really are. and all they are is a bunch of rules that people say god (or whoever there leader is) wants u to follow. all religion is to me is people categorizing themselves under there leaders name and following what they claim to be right. honestly no one really can be sure what is right. and the only thing that makes this possible is a little thing we like to call faith. but to tell u all the truth, in my opinon there is only one thing i will say is real, and that is god. God is there and more real then anything any one has ever known. to all the true christians out there, u all know that feeling. and it is a feeling u can never describe or explain. it is amazing and wonderful. and look at this... of all the people and "religions" u have ever come across who stands out the most? none but christians. christians are the most excited, happiest people i have ever come into contact with. and the reason for that is the holy spirit living within them.
and to all those thinking christianity is a religion... it's not. it's simply believing in the lord and walking with him. yet there are still fake christians out there. and too bad for them cause they will never really feel what people who really have been saved feel.
not to mention a lot has been proven that christ existed and whether all want to believe me or not, so be it. im not answering this to gain 10 points. im answering this to tell u the truth. it is up to you. everyone has free will and the choice to believe in what they want. so more power to you. but to sum up the question, i dont believe in religion. whatsoever. i was a catholic, baptized and all. grew up with that stuff. but i dont even believe in it. and i dont believe in the way people are. a lot of them are fake. but thats what I, MYSLEF think

In my opinion, gods were invented by man to explain things that they couldn't otherwise explain. Lightning and thunder? The gods were fighting. Storms, plague, famine, drought? The gods were mad at man. Attributes like speed, cunning, and so forth that animals had but humans didn't? The gods must have given these to them.

Rituals developed to appease the gods and ask them for favors. These were handed down from generation to generation, until they had the authority of the gods because they believed their gods had given them to them.

Later, as groups grew more powerful and expanded their territory, they brought their religious practices with them and taught them to the conquered peoples. The conquerers were stronger, so their gods must have been better, so the conquered abandoned their old beliefs and took up the new ones. Regions that remained more isolated longer tend to have other religions than those that got conquered earlier.

The purpose of religion you ask? Well, some would look at it as a scapegoat from reality. There are just some people in the world who are scared of death, scared of life even. They need to think there is a Supreme Being watching over them. It gives them hope.

Another reason for religion is for some people to take command and lead a community. In most, if not all, religions you're obligated to live a pure, healthy lifestyle. Therefore, it is like the law of the land.

But the most important reason for me is to be a salt and light to others. To bring others to know the name of my Lord, my Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the only one, the only reason why I live my life. And the only reason why I'm still alive today.

Trust in, live for, and love our Lord and Savior.

And well I think that's it... Yup. =]

The idea of god (in my opinion) is to control the masses. The idea of gods were created by the ancient greeks as a mean to control the population. They would believe that if they were to 'sin' (murder, steal etc) they would be punished by the gods even if they were not caught by their own law enforcement. It gave the population the idea that they were being watched, whatever they did. I think this idea of god is still used for these purposes, the bible (which is simply a book of stories) has been used as the religious book of christians, but i believe its been taken out of context.

I think that the question is sort of "inside-out". Religions don't really serve purposes, other than to perpetuate themselves. What religions do is "take hold" in people, and if they are good at doing so, then they persist, and manage to take hold in more people. They don't necessarily do anyone any good (that is, they don't have purposes). They don't have to do anyone any good in order to persist - they just have to be good at reproducing themselves and at fending off other religions.

religion is for the weak...it gives the human soul something to believe in while they are living so it makes everything seem less scary...it gives groups of people a sense of belonging to something, and generally an excuse to exist however they want now because someday their "creator" will obsolve them of their "sins" just because they believed in him...religion is organized to keep mass amounts of humans "in line"...the more people you can get to follow the same principals the easier the manipulation
