There are Catholics who like lima beans, and Catholics who don't. Most people can understand that. There are Methodists who are Republican and Methodists who are Democrats. Most people can understand that. There are UUs who believe in God and UUs who do not. That is very difficult for people to understand, since we are a church.

Since we don't force people to ascribe to one set of beliefs, we are sometimes called "The church that doesn't believe in anything". That isn't true. We believe in a lot of things, but we are not in lockstep about it. We tend to be liberal, but not always. On any given issue we may be split 80:20 or 50:50. We respect each other's beliefs, even if they are not the same as ours.

We do have some common principles; the first is we believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Even if he is black, brown or white; gay or straight; rich or poor, employed or not, old or young.

Some congregations mention God, or the Lord, some don't.

Very few of us believe Jesus is the savior, the only begotten son of God and one third of the Holy Trinity; if someone does, they are better off in a Christian church. Almost all of us respect His teachings.

The Unitarian-Universalists get most of their ideas from the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson and his New England friends, though they claim some older roots. They have taken "tolerance" to a ridiculous length, and their sermons are more like college lectures.

Most of them believe in God, but in a very vague way. They allow anybody to belong, so some believe in heaven or in Jesus, and some not, though they think they follow many of His social teachings. In politics, most are very liberal.

I belonged to one of their churches for a short time, but got sick of not feeling that I had been to church at all.

It all depends really. Unitarian Universalism allows for a wide variety of beliefs. It's really up to the individual themselves to decide what he or she believes in. Some UUs probaly do believe in God, heaven, and Jesus, and some might not. It all depends.

It depends on the person. In my church, when the children were dismissed for RE, the congregation would say this;

Go now in peace, go now in peace
May the love of God/Life surround you
Everywhere, everywhere
You may go.

So as you can see from this, both theists and atheists can be UUs

the united statesare a huge ol' blended bag. you will discover interior the pews on any given Sunday all flavors of christians (people who have self belief Jesus became divine), agnostics, Atheists, Buddhists, Muslims, etc. i individually am an Atheist, yet on sitting around me final Sunday have been a catholic, a Ba'Hai (sp?), a former Muslim, and a closet Methodist. certainly one of my ministers is Buddhist, one is Atheist. EDIT 9/19/08: you're certainly stunning. you could shelter any concept you pick and nonetheless be a UU: christian, muslim, jewish, ba'hai, atheist, buddist, hindu, pagan, in spite of. they have not any expectancies which you will replace your ideals to be a member. basically be cognizant that no one there believes precisely the comparable ingredient. it particularly is an sensible, in seek of, variety community.
