You don't say your last name... and no one talks about it later. What goes on in AA stays in AA. You can also make up a first name if you want to.

Alcoholics anonymous does not necessarily involve a) alcohol or b) anonymity. Groups are generally full of crack heads and other drug abusers...Oxycontin abuse is very common in big cities. Additionally, if you think you're going to enter a room full of psychologically damaged addicts and remain anonymous, you are in for a big surprise. There is absolutely nothing keeping anyone you talk to from giving your information to anyone they wish. That's why it's important to be very careful what you disclose in meetings.

AA doesn't work and requires an enormous time commitment and change in the way you relate to everyone in your life. Find something productive to do with your time instead!

First name. Are you saying there aren't more than one Bob in the world? Are you saying that you could track down a Michael in a major city, with ONLY that information?

The anonymous part gives people a sense of security that this portion of their life will be kept secret. That what they discuss, stays there.

Because it's anonymous to friends/family but the idea is to come out so people know that you are an alcoholic hence why you tel your name. And also for you to give up the drink.
Not all AA's are like that tho.

You stand up and say your name as introduction and accountability within the group. The anonymous part comes in that you are not to reveal anyone's identification or problem with someone else.

Anonymity can still be accomplished if you provide your first name.

It is also considered anonymous because while you are providing and sharing information within a support group, that is where it stays. It is considered confidential and cannot be shared without permission to members outside the group.

It's a dual purpose psychological affirmation.

> Hi, my name is xxxxx and I'm an alcoholic.

It serves to affirm to yourself the reason you are there and focus your contribution, and it serves to remind every one else of the same.

The first step in dealing with any addiction is acknowledgement, therefore you reiterate that you admit your problem

What you forgot to mention is what is stated after your name, the part of addmission to their addiction. "& I am an alcoholic"

It helps the individual feel more at home, and to realize they are not alone, by being surrounded by other alcoholics.
