The best age to begin fine-tuning some of the basic motor skills (and yes tying your shoes falls into this category) is around the age of 4; no younger though.

The common age is 5-7. Girls will normally learn to tie their own shoes by the age of 5 and it will take a boy about 6 months to a year longer to learn.

Now that is just a general view, so yes there are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part this generalization is pretty accurate.

Some kids it takes longer than others....Some are quick learners and some are not. There is a book that has buttons, shoe laces, zippers and things like that to help those tiny hands learn these simple things. It's really a great way to teach two things, 1) becoming self starters with these things and 2)- loving and learning from books.

Don't put too much pressure on a child to the point that it is discouraging. Learn ways to use song or stories to show how to tie the shoe laces.......if that does work (try Velcro). GOOD LUCK -

I think you can teach a child anything at any age. It's all about consistency and being positive. You obviously can't teach a newborn how to tie shoes, however children are alot smarter then we think sometimes. Example: I taught my daughter to tie her shoes at age 2. My son on the other hand, though I started at the same age, couldn't quite get it until he was almost 4. It all depends on the child.

They will be able to physically able to tie their shoes when their manual dexterity matures to that level. One morning as I (single dad) was driving my 2 sons (ages 4-5) to Montessori School, I noticed their shoes were tied. I didn't remember tying them, so I asked my eldest son. He said he did it, since I had forgotten. I asked where he learned. He said 'at school'. Then I remembered that Montessori teaches kids all sorts of practical tasks. It was a great school, especially for a single parent.

So I say preschoolers can learn to tie their own shoes.

While in or before kindergarten. My son's kindergarten teacher recommended that we start teaching him the summer before kindergarten and that if he didn't have it by then that they (his teacher and teacher's aide) would help him. They do not allow Velcro shoes in kindergarten at my son's school, but he is required to change shoes for gym. It would be a very time consuming task if the teacher had to help fifteen to twenty kids tie their shoes to go to gym and tie them again when they get back, or when they have to put on snow boots to go outside and play then change back into tennis shoes when they come back inside. Don't push your child, they won't learn that way, but I would touch on at least the basics just before kindergarten, if he/she picks up on it right away then great, but I wouldn't worry to much about it.
