Sure, chickens eat a very wide variety of foods, including virtually all vegetables. I always give my chickens their regular egg layer crumble feed, but I supplement it with vegetable peelings, apple cores, stale bread, leftovers, etc. They are actually better than a compost pile, since you can't put leftover meat products in a compost pile but you can give them to your chickens. Then you can use their manure mixed with the straw bedding to fertilize your garden.

A friend of mine at work grew up on a farm with chickens. He said chickens will eat broccoli. Then he said they will eat anything.

I am not sure about chickens...but my cockatiels love broccoli, and so do most parrots...so I would assume seed eaters would also venture towards vegetables and fruit if it were available. It won't harm them...in fact it is better balance in their diet.

Sure and they love it! My dad will take the chickens watermelon and cantaloupe rinds after he cuts them up. They will fight for 1 piece of it when there are still 10 other pieces laying around. It is probably good for them to get fruit and vegetables every now and then.
