Are you asking this because your bird suddenly has a multitude of gross-looking white little pointy things on his or her head/body?

I went frantic about a year ago with my first bird trying to figure it out. Those little worm-resembling things are actually new feathers. They're termed "pinfeathers" because of the obvious resemblance. They will eventually go away. Birds tend to get lots of them in cycles and then disappear wholly for a long time. The reason they primarily appear on the head is because, obviously, as bird cannot groom herself on her head!

I fyour birdie is tame, rub her head a little, even against the feathers- they LOVE it and it helps with the molting process!

It's not that common actually. Occasionally it happens but as long as your bird isn't exposed to other birds whose health is unknown and the bird is healthy, it shouldn't be an issue.
