I work in a cubicle environment. I have been fighting a cough and throat tickle all morning. When I have to cough, it is loud enough to be heard by other staff. Accoridng to etiquette rules, do I need to say, "excuse me" or anything?

You could just give the staff a heads up that you have a cough that you're trying to get rid of and you're sorry if it's bothering anyone.

i don't think so. Too many "excuse me's" would probably be more annoying than the cough over which you have no control. Why add to yet more sounds coming out of your cubicle...

If you're with someone, having a conversation, and one cough comes, maybe say "Excuse me. I've this cough." After that, no more "excuse-me's" to that particular person.

If you're with someone different, same thing.

If you're in a cubicle it is presumed that you have some degree of "alone-ness", so saying "excuse me" shouldn't be expected.

Your co-workers are, for the most part, more worried about getting your cough than they are listening to it. Don't get too close to them, don't use their phones, and don't use your bare hand for coughing into.

It's simply common courtesy to say "excuse me" or "pardon me" when you cough or sneeze, even if you think there's no one around. So yes, you should, if just to be polite. But do go see a dr and get some medications to help relieve the cough, or drink lots of water. If the office air is too dry, a humidifier by you on your desk might be a good idea to help relieve a dry cough.
Take care.

excust...means nothing, do not say it.
I hope at BEST you are COVERING your COUGH!
You cannot keep saying EXCUSE ME all day while you cough.
To SOD with etiquette! You are Sick you should be able to be at home until you are well! that is how the bloody germs are spread about!
Good lord do not apologize! They should allow you SICK TIME OFF! WITH PAY!
That would help to keep the illness out of the office!
Ask if there is any work you can do at home.
Germs spread to UPPER MANAGEMENT TOO!

I would say "sorry" if they were on a phone call or something when it happened, but they are all people and they know you're sick. If you were being lewd for no reason or something it'd be different. The fact you feel bad enough to post the question shows you have character and I'm sure they know that. Feel better sweetie!

I would always say excuse me when I cough or sneeze. Just habit I guess but in your situation I definitely would.

if you're in your own little cubicle - no. You'd gag trying to talk with a throat tickle, and your snot from the sneeze isn't going to hit anyone.

SAYING IT ONCE COULD NOT HURT , BUT I WOULDNT MAKE A HABIT OF IT AFTER EVERY COUGH , THAT JUST GETS REDUNDANT LIKE SAYING BLESS YOU EVERYTIME SOMEONE SNEEZES...MAYBE APOLOGIZE FOR THE NOISE , AND EVERYONE WILL GO BACK TO WORK OR BRING YA SOME REMEDIES ...EITHER WAY , YOU HAVE SATISFACTORILY REMOVED ALL RUDENESS FROM YOURSELF......TAKE CARE.......GR1M

I would ask my boss for a day off--I am sure they'll understand. It's polite to go home and not infect anybody.
