Kind of funny...no one has answered correctly yet! After all these answers. You actually dont need to prime, just so you know. Walls with existing paint simply need to be sanded, wiped, and painted. But....just to be safe, here is what I would do. Get a primer from sherwin-williams. It's called 1.2.3 zinsser primer. It's a latex primer/sealer. Have them tint it to the yellow you picked. Then grab finish paint also. Maybe their promar 200, in a satin finish(for easy washability) and have them tint that the yellow too. Now you have the peace of mind that you did prime, although it is not needed with an already painted wall.
Put 1 coat of primer on and 1 coat of finish...it will be perfect and the coverage will be right on.
Ps- Please email me for any other steps...you have my email....I could have gone on and on about some of the horrible answers you got, but email me....I'd love to chat
AND please dont ever, ever, ever listen to consumer reports- the lady who said that made me laugh

I think one coat of white paint should do. You would need about 2 coats (or if you like going the extra mile, 3) of yellow paint. Just remember to buy all the paint at once.

2 coats of primer and 2 top coats should do. I don't recommend using painter's tape for cutting in. Free hand is easier especially if you're using 2 differnt colors. Wait for 1 side to dry, then paint the 2nd color, if it gets where you don't want, a wet rag will wipe it off easily, but be sure the other area's paint is dry.

you should only need one coat of primer and one to two coats of paint. I recently painted over brown with white and I only needed one coat of primer and one coat of paint. Good luck

When you go to buy the paint talk to them about it and let them what you are trying to cover up. Get the primer tinted to the paint color that you are going to use, that way you may only need one coat of paint. Good Luck.

We had that same horrid color - used one coat of a decent primer - Behr - and 2 coats of a yellow - we were painting a deep almost Tuscan yellow and that worked great - use a higher quality paint like Behr or Sherwin Williams (they are having a Labor Day sale, so it may not be too expensive).

Buy you a mask and paint it one coat with Kilz, then Spackle any nail holes and caulk the baseboards, Use an egg shell sheen for your yellow, that way it is washable, and then paint your baseboards with a semi-gloss yellow. the Kilz will dry in 30 minutes. If you buy super paint egg shell from sw, you will only need one coat but two coats would be better and sw warranties the paint. http://www.sherwin-williams.com I hope this helps

1 coat of primer and 2 paint...make sure to wash the walls first and choose the right type of paint (oil, acrylic, etc.) or the paint will peel off in a couple months. (paint dept. should be able to help with this if you don't know) Good Luck!!!
