It is a given that Tiger will eventually get past the 18 Majors, that Jack won. But Nicklaus had to deal some the game's best players in Palmer, Player, Seve, Watson, Jacklin, Trevino et al. Does Tiger have or will have that same aura?

Some of the best players are also in this era, Michelson, Els, Love, Singh. Except the talent difference between Wood and his competition is greater than Nicklaus and what his was. In addition, Woods has a stronger intimidation over his opponents, not to say Nicklaus didn't have it, but Woods competition completely falls apart if they are close or paired with him. He just flat out scares them. Its as if they almost give up.

Another way to say this is; Look at the difference of separation between them and their respective fields. With Tiger the gap is wider and therefore it makes it look like his competition is weaker, it is not.

I'm old enough to have watched both of those great ones play, and in my opinion Tiger is the best golfer I have ever seen by far. Many of the golfers in Nicklaus' time have said this also, but of course in a very subtle and polite manner as to not offend Nicklaus.

The only real thing that is keeping Jack Nicklaus as the greatest golfer ever in the eyes of some is his 18 majors. If Tiger passes it, then no doubt, he will be recognized as the greatest.

It was hard for me to accept because Jack Nicklaus was the one, but I have been around it enough to now know that Tiger Woods will eventually be known as the greatest golfer.

Once Tiger surpasses Jack's 18 majors and then winds up with 100 total lifetime victories he will probably be recognized as the greatest even though the overall quality of his competition is far weaker. There is a huge gap between Tiger and everybody else on the PGA tour.

You have to take into account that when Nicklaus was at his prime he didn't have the same equipment that is used by Tiger and players today. So to say one is greater than the other is hard to tell. I will go with Nicklaus.

Tiger, because of his complete domination of the game. Nobody has his presence or game. He's unmatched , Mickelson, Els,Goosen ,Singh and Furyk to mention a few are the equal of Palmer, Player & the rest.
