I had an ex-boyfriend who used to hang up on people (including me) any time they said the littlest thing he didn't like. Very childish, and this from a man in his 40's!!!
I don't think it's ever appropriate to hang up, unless someone is being totally crude, obscene, abusive, etc. Unless that's the case, I would always at least say "good-bye" and then hang up, and only then if someone is being very rude. Otherwise, if I don't want to talk any more, I just say "I have to go now," and then say goodbye politely.

Your conscious will tell you, the Holy ghost if your attuned to its promptings will also tell you in your heart and in your mind when it may be appropriate to hang up on someone. Non religious comment would be whenever you feel like you have been dissed, you don't have to regret it if you feel in your heart you've been wronged or if the subject matter you may feel is out of place, or the level of politeness has dropped significantly or... etc.

Other than the obvious of your house being on fire.....
I've hung up on telemarketers when they kept on talking, *after* I've told them, "I'm not interested, and I'm on the Do Not Call List,". If their next words aren't something like "I'm taking your name off the list, now, ma'am" or "have a nice day", I'll hang up on them in midpitch with no regrets.

When you get the first inkling that the conversation is not going anywhere fast. If you promptly hang up, you have the upper hand and the other person usually feels frustrated...It makes my day!

Never. You must say something along the lines of: "This conversation isn't really working out, Goodbye" before. Always close the conversation before you *click. Yes, this apply to telemarketers also ("I'm not interested, Thank you!*click)

Any time they start screamming. Just hang up. When they finally shut up and realize your aren't even there, gives him a reason to think.

when someone is irrational with you on the phone. when you are about to say something you will greatly regret. (easier to apologize for being overwhelmed and hanging up than to take back certain statements). when you are being disrespected, stalked, or harrassed.

I think the answer is never, because if they called you, you mean something to them and they need something. Even if the person is annoying you, you mean something enough to them for them to call you and THEN bug you. Just wait and be patient, you might be surprised.
