I grew up on grilled cheese & homegrown tomato sandwiches. You make a regular grilled cheese and when it's done, you pull it apart and add a couple slices of tomato and a sprinkle of garlic salt. (I'm having one now...YUMMY!) Is this a southern thing? I grew up in the south and every one ate them...I now live in the north and when I tell people about them, they always look at me like I'm crazy.

I grew up in the North, and I've always seen grilled cheese and tomato on the menu. I can't think of a diner that doesn't serve it. Any time I make it, i just grill it all together- maybe they think your crazy for pulling your sandwich apart and adding the tomato later?

that sounds yummy, but I grew up eating grilled cheese sandwiches with a bowl of tomato soup on the side. U dip the sandwich in the soup. now that is awsome. I will try that with tomato on the sandwich. & the tomato soup.

Sounds nice, will try it the next time I make cheese on toast. At least I wont feel as guilty, at least I am having veg!
Years ago a friend gave me cheese on toast but she put ketchup under the cheese and grilled it.Quite good.
I used to have a tin of tomatoes, heated and poured over toast. I sprinkled cheese and a bit of oregano on top. It made a kind of pizza and the soggy bread was yum!

MMMMM I've never tried putting a tomato in my grilled cheese, but it sounds good. Grilled cheese and tomato soup is awesome combo, so I'm sure that sandwich will be good.

They sound fantastic. I grew up in the northern US and have always had grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, but not with the tomatoes on them....I think I'll try one after work! Thanks for the great idea!
