Brand isn't everything--you can get a Philips TV that's better than some Samsung models, and you can get a Samsung that's better than some Philips models.

Generally, though, there is a sense of a hierarchy when it comes to major brand names. While they do seem to break down along national origin lines, it's not because they haven't earned their reputations. I'd break it down this way:

Sony - JVC - Panasonic - Toshiba: on the higher end of the spectrum in terms of quality are the Japanese companies.

Samsung - LG: the Korean companies have less of a cachet to their brand names, but they're generally considered up-and-coming, providing quality that's almost on par with the Japanese but at a more affordable price.

Philips - Magnavox: the bigger-name American companies are regarded just about the same way as we regard American car companies--reliable, cheaper, but also of a lower quality than some imports.

No-names (Apex, Cyberhome, Olevia): the Chinese products (which are sometimes rebranded with more familiar American names like Magnavox) probably have the lowest reputation in terms of quality and reliability. There are cases where this is an advantage--no-name DVD players are the ones most easily "hacked" to play off-region DVD's or to defeat copy protection--but while they're a quick fix for someone who wants a $30 DVD player, I'd be wary of buying a $2000 plasma TV with a no-name brand.

i'd proberly say samsung, another good Tv make is actually LG because if your looking for a LCD TFT wich i persume you are LG was the first company to ever make them and in all this "top" brand Tv's like Sony, Panasonic, Phillips etc. they all use LG's design of the LCD stuff.....so if you want to buy the original maker, get LG

I don't know anything about Phillips, but I was dumb enough to buy a Samsung. Samsung is JUNK.
