I work for a vet so I see all kinds of dogs. If you want a small dog that is intelligent and easily trained then your best bets are poodles (one of the more intelligent breeds in all of the dog world), papillons, jack russells (hyper, but quite smart), or shetland sheepdogs (also called shelties). Personally I'm not a huge fan of poodles but they are very smart & easy to train. Shelties are the dogs that look like miniature collies (but aren't, they are two separate breeds). I have had two of them and they are highly intelligent. We taught them all sorts of things, like to "whisper" when barking, and it was easy since they are used as herding dogs so they are programed (so to speak) to learn many different commands. But any of the breeds I listed before will be easy to train, and they are all pretty cute. Good luck!

If you don't mind doing a little brushing and combing the best small dog, which is easy to train would be a Shih Tzu.

A small mixed breed, they usually display a lot of intelligence, are easily trained and have fewer health problems than pure bred dogs. Ask any vet.

Bischon Frise, or small toy poodles. Not a big fan of those kinds of dogs, but they are great loving pets with high training abilities.

We've had a Shih tzu, a Bichon and 2 Pomeranians.
The Bichon was a goof ball and not very bright.
The Shih tzu was adorable, loving and easy to train.
The Poms are my favorites. They are so smart, affectionate and easy to train. I love my Pommies!

I have a Yorkshire Terrier that is about 4 lbs and almost 11 years old now. We got her as a puppy and she is fantastic. They stay healthy with lots of attention and love.
I would suggest this breed.
