Yes that always bothers me as well. It's just (un)common courtesy to let the people in front of you go first.

Shouldn't the person in the front of the line patiently waiting their turn be allowed to enter first to the new cashier line?
Yes, rude folk are everywhere.
Just hang in there and don't let it get you down.

Interesting answers ... many are saying "first come first served", when that's exactly what the question is all about. Shouldn't the first who came (i.e. first in line) be served first?
I've noticed that some of the larger stores are starting to recognize that concept, and when a new cash opens, the cashier actually invites those at the front of the line to be served first. Bravo to those organizations!

From what I have seen is that the cashier usually calls for the next in line to come over to the new line.

That is so rude! The cashier can clear this up by saying "Can I help the next person in line?" And if the back of the line people scramble, they should be told "I'm sorry, that person over there is the next person in line. " That would teach 'em!

The cashier should say that I can help the next person and make sure that it is the next person. Then after that it can be a free for all. There are people out there that are all for themselves and don't care about anyone surrounding them. Just watch out for yourself and you will be ok.

YES, I totally agree with you BUT it's the cashiers fault and I have complained before. The cashier should go and get the person and take them to her line, it's only fair. Wal-mart is worlds worst

For all of you damn kids who said "no". You kids are the reason that adults can't stand your age group. Little, irresponsible, rude kids. So the next time someone gets in front of you in a line, doesn't save your place when you forgot something and had to run and get it, don't complain. You can't whine when something is unfair or doesn't go your way. You did it to yourself. Karma kiddies, get used to it.
What's wrong with waiting a few more minutes or seconds for that matter. Why is everyone in such a hurry that they can't be polite anymore. I know if my kids didn't hold the door for the people coming in behind them I'd kick their asses. It's being polite, and youth today, I don'[t believe, are being taught that at all.

I'm not really sure what country... or world that may happen in for real, but I have seen it once in 45 years. Most shoppers are concerned with getting in and getting out quickly, not being overly considerate to others while doing so.
I love to do that once in a while (with 5 kids in-tow) just to alert others to the idea of politeness and consideration, also to teach my children we don't have to be in such a hurry all the time and that extra 5 minutes isn't going to make much difference.

Yes they should, but people are always in a hurry and they usually don't care about other people who were there first. I usually just stay where I am, the people in front of me often go try for the other line and then I get helped sooner in the line where I am.

Well, the person in the front of the line is next, so why go? the middle people should go to the next cashier, but from personal expirence here in Idaho, people dont do that.
