If you are deffinately sure they are male and female that is a good start. Breeding depends on a lot of factors. You shouldn't breed them till they are at least 1 year old. Eventually the male will start singing to the female and showing off. He will also regurgitate and feed her to let her know he can moreless provide for her. If you have a wooden nest box on the cage, they will both start peeking their heads in there to check it out. Use about 1 to 1-1/2 inches of nest box bedding material (ie wood chips). Once they get use to the nest box they will start sleeping in there. One or both birds will do this. He will eventually try and breed. But just because they go through the actions doesn't mean the eggs will deffinately be fertile. Sometimes it takes awhile to get it right. The female will then lay eggs in the nest box and both birds will take turns incubating and turning the eggs. If you are careful and know what to look for, if you take a fertile egg at 2 weeks old and hold the flash light up to it, you should see veins and a embryo.

Although Budgies are normally easy to pair up to breed there are some that just do not bond.
As to how to breed them: first make sure they are one a high quality diet of seeds, veggies and fruit. The female must have the deep brown cere that tell you she is in breeding condition, the males will be a dark blue. Both the male and female need to be at least a year old. Hens shouldn't be breed over the age of 3 and male over the age of 6. Add the nest box (wither made or brought) the hen will not want to breed and may not even be interested in breeding until she has a nest site. The male with sing and feed her and they will groom each other. Don't hold your breath to see any mating; this is normally done very early in the morning. Both will check out the box and the hen will enter, if you add wood shavings she will kick it about to suit her, some are happy to leave it in others want it all out.
About 10 days after these signs the first egg would be laid, don't panic if it's later. Eggs are laid every second day until she has a clutch, which on average is 4-6 but they can lay up to nine. If you want to candle them, holding them to a strong flash light to check for fertile signs, this needs to be done day 5. You should see faint red lines running around the inside. If you don't know what to look for do not throw out eggs that look clear.
After 18 days of brooding the first one will hatch, and they will hatch the same as they where laid. This can also take up to 21 days or a bit longer depending on how well the hen sat on the eggs. The male will have been feeding her from the hole and she would only be coming out of the box to relieve herself, her poop will have become bigger in size because of this 'holding on'. Also some males will enter the box along with the hen and sit on the eggs as well, but in budgie it's really the hen that does this work.
When the chicks are first born it's the mother that feeds them a special crop milk, you can see if a baby has been feed by a yellow blob of food in their crop (under the beak) In a week the baby will get a fluffy covering of down feathers, you can handle them at this age now to help tame them down. By week two the father would be helping with the feeding of young and pin feathers would be showing up over the body of the baby. Some colour would be sowing as well.
By week three they will now be looking a lot more grown up the long flight feathers and tail feathers will still need growing in. They will be looking out of the box and dad will be doing most of the feeding. Mother might be even thinking of starting round two of egg by this time and might be snappy at the babies. By week four the baby will be thinking of getting out of the box and checking around, adding a small cardboard box will give them something to hide in if either parent tries to attack them.
It will be another two weeks before the babies can leave the parents, they need to learn how to crack open seeds to feed themselves.

They might try to mate, but the quickest way, if this is what you want, is to put a nest box on the side or in their cage, most birds don't like to lay their eggs on the bottom of the cage unless they "have to". That and birds tend to mate during the spring, most likely even with a nestbox they won't mate until next year. They need to be in a certain temperature, and with certain amounts of light to be "in the mood". But then again, they might just end up being good buddies, I have herd of this happening before where they just bonded, but never mated, so I guess you will just have to wait and see what happens! Good luck!

Before you decide to breed your "Parakeets" or as they are technically known..."Budgerigars" (budgie for short...),
Please ask and answer the following question:
What do you intend to do with the babies? There are hundreds of Budgies, cockatiels and smaller birds that have no homes. Please don't breed them. within 2 years you will so many birds you simply won't know what to do with them. They really won't make you any money, and there aren't enough people to go around for all the birds needing homes. Do the right thing and don't breed them. If you want to adopt one, please located a reputable Adoption Agency.
Try:

they would be more than happy to accept your application for adoption.

If the male and female are caged together they may mate and the female will lay eggs. You have to bld a nesting box for the bird.
