Try the authors Terry Pratchett, Tom Holt, Robert Rankin, Robert Asprin and Craig Shaw Gardner, for fantasy type fiction.
Try G A Henty, Bernard Cornwall, Georgette Heyer, Jean Plaidy, Ellis Peters and Alys Clare.for historical fiction
Enid Blyton, Capt. W E Johns, R L Stevenson, Capt Marryat, Sir Walter Scott and Alexander Dumas (pere) wrote adventure stories I loved at that age.
What the Romans/Tudors/Stuarts/Victorians etc Did for Us series - Adam Hart-Davis are interesting history books.
You could add the Sellars and Yeatman "1066 and all that" series which are still very funny.
Regards,
Tin

Some of these have already been stated by my colleagues:
Lord of the Rings
The Chronicles of Narnia (probably better than LOTR for ease-of-reading)
The Hobbit
Some sci-fi books (I reccommend Robert Heinleins' Have Space Suit, Will Travel, Tunnel In The Sky, Space Cadet, Rocketship Galileo, Between Planets)
The Bible (always good)
Anything by Jules Verne, HG Wells.

Lord of the Rings is very descriptive and slow so I wouldn't suggest that until at least high school age.
Chronicles of Narnia is great for that age. Hardy Boys is good.
Take them to the local library and let them pick out what catches their eye.

To Kill A Mocking Bird, Bridge to Terrabithia, Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry, Eargon...
How about taking them to the book store and let them choose!!! That way they will not feel forced into reading!

The Shannara series by Terry Brooks is good. I started reading them when I was that age. It may help out if you ask your children what they like to read. One thing my mother used to do for me was to take me to the library or bookstore everytime I finished a book so that I was able to pick out something I would enjoy.
