That is why he was called "friend of man" by the ancients.

Prometheus was a son of Iapetus by Clymene (one of the Oceanids). He was a brother of Atlas, Menoetius, and Epimetheus, but he surpassed all in cunning and deceit. He held no awe for the gods, and he ridiculed Zeus, though he fought alongside the gods against the other Titans. Prometheus was the creator of man. When he and Epimetheus set out to make creatures to populate the earth under the orders of Cronos, Prometheus carefully crafted a creature after the shape of the gods: a man.

Prometheus felt sorry for his creations, and watched as they shivered in the cold and winter's nights. He decided to give his most loved creation a great gift that was a "good servant and bad master". He took fire from the Hearth of the gods by stealth and brought it to men in a hollow wand of fennel, that served him instead of a staff. Thus mankind was warm. To punish Prometheus for this hubris (and all of mankind in the process), Zeus devised "such evil for them that they shall desire death rather than li

I love that story.

Since I'm an atheist, I don't think either story is true, but if taken at face value, I'd say Prometheus. He defied the mighty gods to help out mankind, while Jesus was doing what God wanted him to do (or figure in the Trinity...what HE wanted to do). Also, Prometheus had nothing to gain by his actions, as he wasn't human and certainly would not be treated kindly by the gods for that action. Jesus on the other hand, suffered a short while, but was rewarded by God and enjoys eternal life in a happy place. Prometheus instead got to endure eternal punishment, and while crucifixion certainly was not an easy death, I'd say that getting one's liver eaten by vultures on a daily basis would be far worse.

Sorry... I have to stop laughing first... some people are very shallow and ill-informed.

On face value, YES, Prometheus suffered far longer and greater for a (some would say) lesser cause. Jesus knew what was he was going to be asked to do to save the souls of believers, Pro. didn't know Zeus would come down on him so hard for just giving Man fire to play with.

In almost every religion there are sacrifices made by deities or humans to reach higher stages of "evolution". My particular favorite is The Norse God Odin who speared himself to the tree of life with his own spear and hung there for nine days to learn how to read! ('the secret of the runes' he then passed on to man) He also plucked out an eye to have a drink from the river of wisdom (but that was for his own need/greed) and stole the "mead of inspiration" which resulted in man being able to create poetry and song.

placing aside the differences in religion and rank in those respective religions, I would say that Jesus would have given a greater gift than Prometheus (a way to heaven vs. fire).

But their sacrifice is difficult to measure. Prometheus was a titan, which meant he healed quickly. Jesus was human, which meant he suffered worse pain. If you look into the way the Romans tortured people, its a miracle that Jesus even survived to make it on the cross. Personally, I would say Jesus, if only because he wasn't immortal when they beat him and killed him.

No, I am not convinced that Prometheus was completely invested in these creations, even though he showed some sign of compassion toward them.....

Yet, Christ invested himself to mentor 12 men on how to walk the path.....He demonstrated his message of peace, by allowing the wicked religious leaders to slay him without defending himself....He honestly believed that these 12 men would get it and carry on the torch, because he prophesied to them that they would do greater things than him...Yet, they never did or it would be recorded somewhere....I honestly believe that Christ loved those 12 men more words can describe, so I would have to choose Christ over Prometheus.

Yes, Prometheus' fate is much more significant than the Biblical Christ's.

Sadly, despite equivalent proof of existence as the Christian God, Prometheus' tale is not as widely known.

No, because Prometheus is a mythological figure who has no historical existence. However, Jesus was indeed a person who lived, and there are historical documents to prove that he did. Even those who do not accept Jesus as a Redeemer, admit to His existence.

Cow!!

No I don't think Prometheus made a bigger sacrifice for mankind then Jesus.

No I don't. Even if Prometheus was true, which he isn't, Jesus gave the gift of love which is far more valuable than fire.

You are very confused. Jesus died one of the most horrible deaths to wipe away our sins, that includes YOUR sins too. You cannot compare Jesus to any body. A "friend of man" is much different that being called Savior, which is what Jesus is. He is the Son of God.

In a way, he did, because his sacrifice was an eternal one.

But Prometheus was a Titan, not a human. And after all, his story never happened.
