Option 1: (only If your PC is Windows XP:)
- go to PC World and get a "Cross-over cable" and use it to link the PC & Laptop - if your PC only has one network card, you will need to buy a new one and install it in the PC
- On the PC, go to Control Panel, double-click Network Setup Wizard, and follow the on-screen promtps about "Sharing an internet connection" - it's pretty straightforward and Windows takes care of the details.
- (On the laptop, you may need to go to Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection and select properties, highlight TCP/IP and select Properties, and ensure "Obtain an IP address Automatically is selected.)

Option 2:
- Get on the internet to a reputable on-line dealer and buy a D-Link DSL router/Wireless access point combined - Like a DWL-G700 - I got mine for £65 including delivery and it has worked without a hiccup for 18 months.
- replace your existing DSL router with your new one, plug your PC into it and follow all the instructions for installing the hardware & software and making it secure (change the default admin/password and setup a WEP key on the wireless)
- On your laptop, use its wireless software (eg Intel Wireless Connection Wizard) rather than the Windows built-in one to setup the same SSID, WEP key and it should connect.

yeah if you want to share your connection u will need to use a router, or ICS (internet connection sharing) but the pc would need to be on all the time and the laptop networked in the pc.

well it depends on what broadband.
if its via the telephone line u would need a ADSL router
or via cable a XDSL/cable router.
