I have had both and still they come and go. And no doctors so far can tell me the difference all they do is prescribed medication. But listen to this: On my own i can tell the difference, the clinical depression is usually connected with long term ordinary depression. Say for instance i get ordinary depression because of my mother passing long ago, now if that is not treated meaning i don't talk to nobody about it or hell i don't even read about it, then it can easy turn into clinical depression which means now ever thing is depressing all your thoughts and dreams which can stop you from moving or thinking your way out of it by yourself then you will need a doctors medication. You understand?

We all have ordinary depression or sadness that comes and goes. It is part of life. Clinical depression is diffferent. Clinical depression is a state of sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and/or activities of daily living. Although a low mood or state of dejection that does not affect functioning is often referred to as depression, clinical depression is a medical diagnosis and is different from the everyday meaning of "being depressed".

Clinical depression usually requires medication.

For clinical depression you don't find a certain reason apart from medical reasons. For ordinary depression in most cases you find a reason.

clinical depression is from a chemical imbalance i the brain. ordinary depression is when we get our feelings hurt, we feel un-appreciated, or when something tragic happens to us.
ordinary depression is completely curable without any drugs. clinical (or chronic) depression is a different story. you will need a doctors help, and possibly medication.
if you have ordinary depression please read my question "an open letter to depressed people".

Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance. You are depressed even when life around you is great. Regular depression is situational, like a loved one dies, you lost your job etc. You get over it and can be happy again.

"Normal" depression allows one to see an end in site, the so called light at the end of the tunnel, but clinical depression presents itself in such a way that hope is sometimes non-existent. That's one way to measure it.
