i would think this is the kids way of feeling a little more "grown up". Let him say it. It'll lose it's novelty soon enough. At least it's not the big "F" word!! Be careful though, he may be moving on to bigger words, just testing you to see what he can get away with. If you dont make a big deal out of the "freaking" word, if he tries the other swear words and gets busted for it, maybe he'll stick with shoot and darn.

7 is probably a little too young to be using an alternate curse word that is so close to the real f-word. I'm no prude, but I wouldn't allow my child to say that at 7. My daughter is 11 now and doesn't talk like that in front of me.
What I can't stand are the little ones running around Wal-Mart or the mall using the real curse words loudly in public!

Well it's alot better than the alternative word. I can't believe what comes out of the mouths of babes now a days. You got these little 4-5 year olds cussing like a sailor. They think it's normal because that's what they hear on the playground, TV. It's everywhere. When I was a kid, I remember saying a bad word can't remember exactly what. but my dad punished me big time. It was a lesson I never forgot.Don't swear much to this day.

I say "freakin'" some times but I don't use real curse words. However, I don't say freaking in front of my mom (I'm 28 years old) because she doesn't like it. She also doesn't like barf or crap. I am also a mom and I wouldn't want my daughter using any of those words either (she's learning to talk/19 months old). I am already teaching her to say goodness and she's saying wow or whoa instead of words that others can look down upon. Growing up, my sister and I got in big trouble if we even said stupid. I thought it was funny back then but now having a daughter I don't want her to call people names or say words that are inappropriate.

That sounds like cursing to me. In fact it seems like a substitute for the "f-word" and not "shoot" or "darn". I think you should speak with the child and explain to him why it's not cool to use such words. Do it in a loving manner and do not get rough with him as this will make him feel insecure and belive that he's a bad kid- when he's really not. Good luck

For the most part, the word freaking kinda makes me laugh. I don't really think of it as a bad word...however if someone continually uses it as in all slang, they don't sound so intelligent or professional, so I probably won't encourage my kids to use it.
The word does remind me of a funny story from when I was teaching preschool.
A little girl came up and tattled on one of the four year old boys. She said that he called her and A** hole. I called him up and asked him if he had called her a bad word and he said no. She was standing there and said, "He did too. He called me and A** hole. He adamantly denied it saying, "I did not call her that!" He was so strong in his conviction that he hadn't said called her that, that I was taken aback and she again insisted that he called her an A** Hole.
Then he turned to me with wide eyes and said, "I didn't call her an A** Hole. I called her a FREAKEN A** Hole!"

the whole point of a curse word is to exclamate something. If you want to exclamate something but dont want to offend you say crap, darn, or freaking. Seeing as how its not a curseword I personally wouldnt worry about it. I take it as an act of politeness because if the kid was doing it to be out of line they would have said the original cuss word to begin with.

These kinds of terms are used in much more frequency these days. On TV, at school, extracurricular activities, etc. It is virtually impossible to avoid. My 7 year-old son has picked this phrase up, and all we can do is mark it for him by saying we don't approve. Beyond that, all I can do is try (with a small failure rate, unfortunately) and model appropriate language. Eventually, it will sink in.
My ultimate hope is that he will learn to use any language or vocabulary he wants that is available, but will have the wisdom to know when and where to use it.

At age 7 a child is 'freaking' old enough to understand the definition of the word adverb. Perhaps they simply need to learn to be more creative in using vauge intensifiers.
