PETA is a propaganda organization that uses deception and emotion to get an invalid point out to the general public.
True animal cruelty is being dealt with in society. A person can spend more time in jail for beating or torturing a dog than they do for killing or torturing a human. Sad, but true; althought I do feel there should be stiff penalties for mistreatment of animals.
PETA's main objective is the elimination of regulated sport hunting. Let's look at a few facts:
Without regulated hunting, wild animals, due to the encroachment of 'civilization' into their habitat, will die of starvation and disease; a slow, painful, miserable death. Which is more cruel?
Regulated sport hunting has brought many spieces back from the brink of extinction; elk, antelope, and Canada geese to name just a few.
Regulated sport hunting has NEVER caused the extinction of ANY animal species. Market hunting has, and the buffalo were nearly wiped out due to US government policies concerning Native Americans (Indians to those of us not PC). These practices were outlawed by sportsmen who care about the wild animals we hunt.
PETA used an illegal hunt in which they poached a bear to use as propaganda in their attempt to stop the hunting of bear and cougar in Oregon with dogs. Unfortunately, an uninformed public fell for the scheit they were putting out and their illegal methods worked.
There are some amino acids and proteins beneficial and necessary to the human body that can only be found in meat.
Wild animals are a joy to see and watch. If PETA is successful, these wild creatures will diminish and eventually become extinct, a sad fact the animal rights morons don't want the general public to be aware of.
If you fell for PETA's propaganda tripe, I would suggest you take a hard look at your ability to think rationally. They are liars to the 'n'th degree.

You can't stop all of the cruelity in the world(I know of a site more terrible than anything PETA shows, but I won't put it here, because I only went there 2 times and it gave me nightmares:( all you can do is try to do what you can for yourself. If you want an animal, adopt from a shelter, instead from some place that may be supporting a puppy mill. If you eat meat (I do). Buy from places that are regularly monitored by officials(it's still sad animals have to die sometimes, but for meat eaters it happens). You have chosen to be a vegitarian. And that is good for you.I am hoping you are doing it with your parents/ doctors permission, because vegtarians sometimes need suppliments

Well, you have to remember that PETA is a pretty radical animal rights organization, so of course, they're going to show you the very worst things they can find to convince you of their ideals. They don't show you the meat processors that have switched to humane means of killing that don't cause undue suffering. They don't show you information about how livestock live better quality lives than they would in the wild. They just show you edited versions of videos they took during break-ins to labs and meat packing plants, giving you a very slanted view of the world to fuel their propaganda. Then they go and bomb research labs that use mice for experiments, attempting to free lab animals into "the wild" (of say, San Francisco or Seattle), despite the fact that they might be specially bred and can only live in a sterile environment (and mice and rats are VERMIN, by the way...) They burn down facilities that house research animals (sometimes with the animals inside... hmmm)
Bottom line, I respect your decision to go vegetarian and your reasons for doing so. But don't turn to PETA for validation of your decision; just feel good about how you're living, and leave them to do whatever they do; their motives aren't yours.

People generally don't introspect or ask themselves why they do things or have such horrid traditions. I'm glad you thought to look into yourself. That takes courage.
As for why people eat meat, I think it is because it is a mentally dominating aspect of the human species. Like the Romans who tried to conquer nature by building Rome and ducting water, eating "lesser" species is a great way to feel superior and get a self grandizing feeling. Simply put people feel less in power and need an outlet to make their psyches feel better - eating meat is a base cultural way of filling in this inadequacy.
