I went to the MD on Tuesday because the skin on my breast area, upper back, and lower back were hurting horribly (all on the right side of my body). The skin still hurts, and she gave me an anti-viral medicine to treat shingles. Is it possible to have shingles without having a rash? I have a few bumps here and there, but nothing like the pictures I've seen.

Unfortunately, it is possible to have the pain of shingles without the rash. occasionally (I don't know how often) the pain will not go away completely. This is called post herpetic neuralgia. If the pain is severe, ask your doc about meds for nerve pain. Lyrica and Neurontin are the 2 main ones that could help.

Shingles can be outward or inward depending on the severity of outbreak. To relieve the pain try an oatmeal bath. My kids had chicken pox and the oatmeal bath was helpful for the pain. Shingles are a virus. You can get it again.

Oh, yes, and it generally is quite painful for a few days before the outbreak. If she got you on anti-viral drugs that early, she is a good doc, and may have aborted the outbreak before it reached the skin to form the exquisitely painful blistering rash.

Yes it is possible to have it without outward signs other than pain on nerve endings.
