I'd noticed a couple days ago that my dog has a lump under her arm pit and I had attributed it to fleas which I have now taken care of. But today, I checked it again and it looks as though it is really itching her and that she has scratched it so much it is bleeding. It is soft to the touch and doesn't seem to bother her when I touch it. Could this be what they call a "hot spot" or should I be more concerned and take her to the vet?

She is 6 months old. I just got off the phone with my vet and have her an appoitment but I would still like your opinions so maybe I can narrow down what the problem is.

Thank you everyone that answered my question. I just returned from the vet. I found out that she has an allergy to fleas. So the bites she had from when she had fleas are still itching her really bad. SO, it was nothing serious!!!

Any and all lumps should be checked out by your veterinarian, regardless of how your pet is acting. Your vet will assess the location, duration, firmness, and size. A needle aspirate may also be taken to look at what type of cells make up the lump. This is not painful, and not usually even noticed by most pets.

It could be an abscess. You didn't specify the age of the dog but they sometimes just grow extra little lumps of skin as they get old. I know, it's gross but I would take her to the vet. That way if it is an abscess they can give you antibiotics to see if that takes care of the problem. If it doesn't seem to be affected by the medicine then they will offer to run different lab tests on it. Depending on how much money you want to spend on which tests they do.

Well being that young it's hopefully just a bug bite or something along those lines, my doggies is cancer. :(
Good Luck with your puppie!

To keep your dog comfortable, wash and dry the area with mild soap and watter, pat it dry.she is probably just digging to much and may have a flea problem. take her to the vet and they can ease your mind. i don't think it is going to kill your dog,as long as you get her to the vet for a check on the spot.

GET THE DOG TO THE VET QUICK. My dog had lump on her neck. we found out it was a form of cancer. After months of chemo our dog was put to sleep. We blamed ourselves for taking our time because we thought the lump was just fat.
