'Cause sometimes their parents only talk in that language to chastise them or something. But if not, it's cause when a parent talks to you in their nativ language and you answer abck in the same language, a LOT of people usually gawk or like poke their friends and are like omg you know french/spanish/whatever!! And then they ask you to say things in that language and it gets really annoying. I would know.

A couple of reasons, I think:
1) In the US, American culture is obviously the norm, so if you don't speak English at all times and eat hamburgers and listen to Eminem or whatever, it's a mark that you're relatively new, or that you haven't fully assimilated into American society -- i.e. you're still an outsider. Since kids (particularly teens) are very concerned about fitting in wherever they are, this sense of separation from everybody else can be frustrating and embarrassing; it keeps them from blending in fully.
2) There can be a certain stigma to speaking a foreign language in America. It's almost as though there's the intimation that they speak their own language because they're somehow not intelligent or sophisticated enough to adopt the language of the place where they live. It's not right, but unfortunately that's the way some people look at it.

It could be because they realize that it's rude to speak another language in front of someone who is present, but doesn't understand that language, & those who are talking are capable of speaking in both languages.

because they now live in a country that speaks english and they don't want to be identified as a foreigner...as if we were to live in france and speak our natve tongue we'd be considered an outsider..
