SP2 means Service Pack 2.

The service packs include some patches or upgrades to the original version of Windows (any versions).
SP2 is the latest version so far.

It helps in fixing some security flaws in the original version of the operating system and/or add additional facility or just make the operating system works faster (slightly).

More information :

A service pack (in short SP) is a collection of updates, fixes and/or enhancements to a software program delivered in the form of a single installable package. Many companies, such as Microsoft or Autodesk, typically release a service pack when the number of individual patches to a given program reaches a certain (arbitrary) limit. Installing a service pack is easier and less error-prone than installing a high number of patches individually, even more so when updating multiple computers over a network.

Service packs are usually numbered, and thus shortly referred to as SP1, SP2 etc.It is notable however that they may bring, besides bug fixes, entirely new features, as is the case for instance with the SP2 of Windows XP.

Hope this helps

SP2 has all the bells and whistle that Bill Gates had hidden in the Vault when it was first released. The first half came with SP1 and eventually he let the next ones out with SP2. Sp2 simply includes all the XP Pro windows updates in one place. There have of course been more updates since and we may one day see SP3.

It just indicates that Service Pack 2 has been applied to that version.

You would not have to run the service pack after you installed the software as you would with just XP Pro.

XP Pro is different from XP Home in that there are a few, but not many services and features not available in home that are in Pro. And many of them if you know XP can be started and used.

best,
