2003 Toyota Camry 4-cy.
I was just driving and Check Oil Pressure Light came on. I was attempting to drive to nearest point of relief when engine stalled. Coudn't start it. Had to tow it. Discovered that oil was splattered on lower engine. Tech said that oil filter was missing and had fallen off. I had oil changed 3200 miles ago. Engine is now frozen. Need new engine?

If the oil filter fell off, the person who put it on didn't tighten it enough. It's not a common occurrence for an oil filter to fall off -- if it were, people would be blowing up their engines constantly. You need to take it up with the service station that changed your oil the last time. If they give you the runaround, take them to small claims court. That shouldn't happen.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! You're all wrong.

A few years ago, my son's now ex-girlfriend bought a good high-mileage 1999 4 cylinder Camry, which had like 160,000 miles.

One day this exact thing happened. She called him, and he went there, put the oil filter back on, tightened it correctly, and added oil. Within half a block the filter BLEW off the car again.

It was properly tightened both times.

This filter was a Fram Tough-Guard, and clearly there was a manufacturing problem.

He put on a genuine Toyota filter and it never happened again.

I recommend you use a genuine Toyota filter -- unless that is what you are already using, in which case I have no idea which way to jump -- if you ever get it running again.

We told her to send it to Fram, but she was a lazy person and never bothered.

I am surprised no one told you to shut the motor off instantly when the oil light comes on, She did and there was no damage.

your owners manual probably calls for 5w30. Toyota oil if you want but Toyota is not an oil company and probably get it as cheap as possible to maximize their profit. royal purple is a good synthetic, or mobile 1 I personally use synthetic in everything i own. I also use fram XG filters, the are guaranteed for 7000 miles. yes change the tranny fluid, but get the correct fluid. gm use dextron, ford use mercron, Chrysler atf+3. others ? check with the parts store, again I recommend synthetic. along with replacing the brake pads, flush the brake system and use new fluid. brake fluid absorbs water and deteriorates. also the fluid in the caliper gets hot and deteriorates so bleed brakes once a year. if price is not a factor, flush the brakes and use dot 5 brake fluid. while your at it flush the radiator, don't forget the air filter. maybe have a fuel injection service performed, where the car is actually run on a bottle of compressed cleaner, not something poured in the tank

Either the wrong filter was put on with threads that didn't match, or it was not screwed on tight enough.

Your engine is probably shot. You should have shut it off INSTANTLY when you saw a warning light.

I would go back to where you had the work done and tell them they owe you a new engine.

Of course, they will laugh, and you will have to sue them.

P.S. carnut has a good point also.

OIl filters do not just fall off after 3200 miles. If it had worked loose itwould have dripped oil all over theplace and seized the engine before it just fell off. Someone has to have removed it on you.

It could have slowly worked its way off if it wasn't tightened enough.
Did you verify after your last oil change that the filter was back in place?
And yes, frozen engines typically mean they are trashed and you will need a new one.
I'm quite happy with my Chevrolet HHR. And I do my own oil changes.

You better be going back to who ever did your last oil change and servicing. That should not be occurring. however i expect you may need a lawyer for this one if your engine is seized.

when you last change oil, the filter was not tightened enough. because of the vibrations while running the car, it will unscrew itself and fall-off.

guess it just wasnt put on tight enuf.... they are threaded so maybe vibrations over time got it to loosen up......Also it is a longshot but if you have any enemies that might do such a thing, it is possible somebody loosened it up..... It is unlikely it just fell off....
