To make sure you actually bought the program...the CD key should be either in the manual or on the CD or on the CD case.

I think it's a way for them to keep a lid on pirated software. Supposedly only the people who bought the program will have the CD key.

ARRRR! It's to keep the pirates away. Should have come with the install CD. I always keep my CD keys in alittle box next to my PC. With a note on each to remember what it's for.

It is an anti-piracy measure.
If the program you purchased was legally bought at a store, and it wants a cd-key, then you should have one.
If you downloaded it from limewire/kazaa, then they are trying to prevent you from STEALING their program.
CDKeys are but one of many anti 'program theft' techniques.
If you LEGITIMATELY bought the program (say at bestbuy or something) and don't have a cdkey, you can contact the manufacturer of the program.

it regesters the program. If you go on line, and it is your operating system, like XP, Microsoft can discover if you are putting the same copy of the OS onto more than one computer. Also, some programs have limited downloads and the key may allow the company to keep count of the number of downloads.
