MS-DOS began as QDOS (for Quick and Dirty Operating System), written by Tim Paterson for computer manufacturer Seattle Computer Products (SCP) in 1980. It was marketed by SCP as 86-DOS because it was designed to run on the Intel 8086 processor.

"MS-DOS" was created by MicroSoft. It was the combined efforts of bill gates and paul allen.

However, they DID NOT CREATE IT FROM SCRATCH.

What they did was this :
The purchased the rights to "Qdos" (by the previously mentioned tim patterson, of SCP in seattle) and then modified his work into their end product. Basically, they used his work as the foundation, improved it, and released a new product.

Tim Patterson was paid well (at the time, and considering the fact that it was all a gamble) for his product. I'm sure he's kicking himself NOW, however, back when he was just "some programmer in a computer store" the money was substantial.

They used that as the stepping stone to get market, but the work after "ms dos 1.0" was theirs (although some parts were through combined efforts with other companies. - Microsofts Antivirus program was actually central point antivirus (back in the dos days)

Nowadays, it is such a multiheaded monster that it's unbelievable to think that microsoft could do it all by themselves, even as big as they are. Windows XP is the work of not just microsoft, but of pretty much every other computer software & hardware company out there.
