Kindergarten was optional when I was that age but it looked like a lot of fun. My mother had a bunch of us in the house at the time so getting me out from under foot made the decision a no brainer. I knew a lot of kids in first grade who didn't go to K. These days, kindergarten is what follows at least 2 years of preschool.
Seems that most moms work these days, and very few worked outside of the home when I was that age.

Oh yes. I took my little red and blue nap mat and marched myself 2 blocks down to kindergarten every morning in my Sears catalog finest.

yes i did and im 36. i remember they just change 6th grade to junior high. it was considered elementary and the parents were all enraged, but the changed happened and now your in junior high in 6 grade. for me education is soo important for my daughter i push it and she has been in some kind of school since 2.now shes in pre-k
