I do not routinely prescribe antibiotics or pain killers after a root canal if the procedure goes smoothly and the tooth was not abcessed to begin with. The root canal treatment itself should resolve whatever infection or pain the tooth was experiencing, and in most cases over the counter painkillers such as motrin or tylenol will reduce the mild discomfort one gets from the procedure.
Actually, I think it's good practice not to overprescribe for two reasons.
1. Reduce the chance of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria developing.
2. If the root canal treatment does not turn out 100% good, I wouldn't want that fact to be masked by the antibiotics and narcotic painkillers. It's better to know right away so that more cleaning of the canal can be done before sealing off the root canal, sometimes extra roots are present that should be treated.

I've had 2 root canals. The first one I wasn't given antibiotics but given pain killers which I never used . 2nd root canal I had to go on antibiotics before he would even touch me because I let it go for so long. Then he did the work I was given pain killers and again didn't need it.Root canals are not pain full I had two and never felt a thing.I think it's just a great way for dentists to make an easy 800.00 dollars. I find it hard to believe that a root canal costs that much for a little extra work of filing out your roots, putting pins inside the tooth and filling it.

ABSOLUTELY. This is more often the case than not. Antibiotics are only to be used when indicated and they are quite often not indicated for root canal treatment. Most of the time, local measures are more than sufficient. Most of the time, in fact, root canal treatments have noting to do with infection.

Often, the act of initiating root canal treatment eliminates the need for prescription pain medications, also. I only prescribe when needed and I enocourage people to call if they need something called to a pharmacy when I ahve not written something for them. I doubt I get called more than once or twice a year in those cases.

you want antibiotics for effective in case your enamel is absessed. Absesses can harm a good purchase, the dentist needs to open up the enamel root pull out the nerve (i.e. drill into it) and enable it drain for a pair weeks. Then they go back and fill contained in the hollow and placed a crown on regularly. 800 feels like a truthful fee and is not out of the question. That sucks to have 8 unexpectedly... yet i imagine once you've an absess untreated (no antibiotics) the an infection can spread to surrounding tooth. i ought to call the more effective constructive business organization bureau in this guy notwithstanding because having dealt with the tooth purely a month in the past this should not be happening. Sue for repayment for the fillings a minimum of!!! maximum likely what has occurred is an absess spread. that extremely sucks, i have had tooth subject matters plenty contained in the previous too and its the worst soreness i have ever experienced. Your dentist could grant you with soreness meds perscription once you've an absess... certainly ask for this.

I've gotten a root canal done by a specialist and all he gave me was novicane. If the tooth is infected about a week prior to the procedure they will give you antibiotics to clear the infection up. Other than that its really not painful. If you think you may be nervous or scared as the doctor if you can have laughing gas or valium.

Yes I've received root canals in my lifetime. In fact I just had one done a month ago, but no I never went without taking antibiotics. The pain becomes too unbearable after awhile and without the pain relievers you can't do much with your mouth. I wouldn't recommend you go without taking any either, but if you strive on pain then by all means go for it, but don't come crying to me if the pain don't go away.
