The wife has wanted to quit her job for some time, and we just found out that she is pregnant. Can I add her to my insurance as a dependent? Or is this a pre-existing condition that would cause a problem.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on your insurance co. Some companies will let you add her on as long as she is only about 2 mos or less pregnant. Some other companies WONT let you add her at all. You would need to call the ins co (# should be on your card) and talk to them....good luck and CONGRATS! Worst case scenario, if you really need the insurance, she could always go to the local health department and apply for that type of coverage through them. They have ins based on income for that.

Pregnancy is NOT a pre-existing condition. This is a federal law--I believe it's somehow related to HIPAA.

Most companies that offer group insurance have open enrollment periods twice a year for you to add dependants to your insurance. If it's not time for you to do this, your wife quitting her job is considered a major life change, and you can add her as soon as she quits. Before you do this, make CERTAIN your insurance has maternity coverage and well-baby visits.

Some people already add their spouses to their insurance BEFORE they find out that they are going to have a child.
Yes, you can add her as a dependant, so, if anything happens to you, your wife and child can be taken care of. It also depends on what kind of insurance you have. Check with your insurance company first.

yes, it is called pre-existing condition. It will be a problem, contact your health insurance or HR first and see if they allow. I would suggest that you contact health insurance company and asked general question first, and don't give out name, same with HR if you can.

Normally, you can only add your spouse to your insurance based on special condition, quitting a job can be one, but if she is less than 3 months pregnance, I don't think it is a problem..

again, check with your hr

Well you should be able to add her even if she isn't pregnant. I am on my husband's insurance and so are our 2 kids. Just remember if you don't have any insurance how will she get to the doctor for regular visits to make sure the baby is okay. And when she has the baby you will be stuck with that enormous hospital bill. Trust me it happened to me with my first child. So yes, you should be able to add her. Just go to your employer and ask what papers need to be filled out to get her added to your insurance. Also it probably will cost more for your insurance when she does get added and you might have to pay a deductable also. But it's worth it.

Actually, the reason I am asking is, she currently is employed and has good insurance. But we think that the stress with her job might cause problems. She's been contemplating quitting, and we just found out a few days ago.

So that complicates her quitting.

Most insurance does not consider Pregnancy and ILLNESS. Therefore it is not a pre-existing condition.
Best bet check with your insurance carrier.

I don't understand why she wasn't under your coverage to begin with. I would bring this directly to your companies human resource department - I don't believe you should have a problem. Let's face it what company would want to deal with the fallout of from not covering a pregnancy - talk about a public relations nightmare. They only do things like that to public school teachers.

most insurance would have no problems letting you add immediate family members. You might have to pay an additional premium every month out of pocket, but there should be no problems to add on.

I got preg before my husband's insurance took effect and they cover me. Their policy is that pregnacy isn't one of the pre-existing conditions. We have blue cross blue shield. But every company is different. You should check with them.
