My maternal grandfather drew songbirds freehand. I was amazed that he could conjure such lifelike creatures from the tip of a fountain pen. I recently saw a hand-drawn songbird in the wallpaper at the local Starbucks which reminded me of him. I smiled.
We moved several hundred miles away from my paternal grandparents after my father's death when I was three, so I really only got to know them on summer visits. But I still hear my grandfather's voice whenever I shoot a rifle: "Control your breathing - concentrate on the rise and fall of the sight on your target. Time your squeeze of the trigger as the sight rises to the target." I remember thinking at the time: "He taught my dad to shoot, and now he's teaching ME because my dad can't."
He also gave me the pocket watch his parents had given him on his 18th Christmas. I was able to pass that watch on to my son this past December on HIS 18th Christmas ... many smiles here.
Thanks for the evocative question.

I wasn't there when it happened, obviously, but when my mom was little she used to put curlers in his hair. Once she had him all done up and a fire call came in (he was a fireman) so he put his helmet on and rushed out the door curlers and all. When they got back to the fire department he had forgotten all about his hair and when he took off the helmet all the guys saw the curlers.
My grandfather has been gone for almost 7 years but to this day if I go down to the fire department they talk about it.
My dad's father is still around but I will always remember him and smile when I eat fudge. He makes the BEST fudge ever.

I lost my Grandfather years ago but he was the security guard at the ladder factory across the street from my childhood house. Everytime I think about how he used to check in on us when he did his rounds, I smile.

My grandfather was very strict and anal about his belongings. No one was allowed to be around his car or else he would come out yelling to get away. One day my cousin was riding her bike and fell near his car and made a big dent and scratch on it. He came out screaming and yelling almost to heartattack. I smile when I remember that and thank my cousin for falling. My grandfather was a grumpy old man..

My grandfather helps run a small recording studio and helped my uncle make two albums. Nothing famous because he doesn't want to be famous, but the songs they wrote and recorded make me smile everytime I hear them.

My grandpa makes me smile because he is the only normal person in my family of crazzies. I have no idea how he ended up with the family that he's got (He probably doesn't know either), but he has always been supportive, loving, and patient with every one of his kids and grandkids (Yes, me) more than he probably should have. My grandpa makes me smile because he's got the hugest heart no matter how ungrateful we may be at times. Love you, grandpa! =)

I never knew one of my grandfathers and the other passed while I was still very young. I take comfort in the fact I would have loved them because of their wonderful wives, my grandmothers, I do remember!

when I look at pictures of my grandfather I smile. He had a twinkle in his eye and enjoyed having kids around (he had 12 of his own). And he was a carpenter and he enjoyed making toys for us.
