I often walk back from the gym at night and to get back to my town I go along this road which is surrounded by thick woods, fields, marshes and rivers/streams. I often notice a different smell in the air that is not present during the daytime. Its kinda fresh smelling and I find it very relaxing after an intense training session. What causes this smell? And what is it that causes it to be present in the night and not during the day?

This smell could be caused by many things but if there is a stream or river nearby than it could be the smell of the water that you get. And if it is at night than there wouldnt be as many cars or other outside forces to interfere with the natural smells.

If you're living near a coastline (or, indeed, any other kind of barrier between terrain types), it's likely that the wind goes one way during the morning and another way during the evening. This might blow some smell that isn't produced nearby over your area, letting you smell it. From your description, it may be from some kind of plant, although at the same time it may be artificial (perhaps from a factory).

Couple of thing mostly due to lack of sun.

After sun goes down the moisture does not get baked out of air as readily and can accumulate...also since air is not as hot it cannot hold so much smelly things in it.

Also after sun goes down the plants open up their pores and can release their O2 and take in CO2 which freshens air.

Since people are less active at night we don't throw as much crap around so you get to smell real nature instead of what people make nature smell like

You are probably smelling the evening dew as the earth cools ( like after summer rain) and also your senses will be more acute in the dark.

During the day wegetation uses CO2 and produce the Oxygen. In the night they breath like humans taking Oxygen from atmoshpere and dump co2. If this what causes it I dont know.

Yeah what they said about the moisture at night due to the sun being on the other side of the world... especially closer to dawn is when it's coolest at night.

I don't know about the ecology side of nature, but it could be you notice it more at night - our primary sense, vision, is reduced in the dark so our other senses become more acute to compensate.

It could be the plant evening primrose or deadly nightshade, which releases its odours during the evening rather than the day!

I think it has something to do with plants taking in oxygen as opposed to carbon dioxide at night. Don't quote me on that though.
