What you need is to be proactive about it! Start with a straightening shamp and cond. Then towel dry it, and rub in a straightening cream. Now you need a flat brush or a large barelled round brush (both can be bought at a beauty supply store, of course, but a lot of these brushes are now available at places like Walmart and Target (if you're in the US)). You want to blow dry your hair AROUND the brush, the brush is going to be what does the final straightening. Comb your hair into the shape you want: as in part on the left side, bang away from your face, or whatever. With the brush, take a section (just a clump, not to large) of hair at the scalp, with the brush UNDERNEATH the hair, hold the blow dryer nose against the brush and hair at a 45 degree (this is approximate here!) angle. Count to five or ten then slowly pull the brush out to the ends, moving the dryer with it. This takes some practice but it isn't tough to learn with time. Do this over your entire head. Be sure to blow dry in the direction your want the hair to lay or you'll end up with A LOT of unwanted volume when you're done. Comb the hair into the shape you want and finish it with a wax pomade. This will hold it into place. Do NOT use too much, though, or your hair will look greasy. If the shape is good, but you still have a lot of volume, then you could have it thinned (they sometimes call this texturiing) out by a stylist, but ONLY if it's chin length or longer.

If it's local humidity that's making your hair poof out, this will work, but the poof will come back in a couple of hours. Sad, I know. But there are some terrific products out now that fix exactly this problem. I would definately suggest a salon to get these products. And get a great style, too, while you're there. Don't go cheap! I'm not talking Supercuts or some other fast-food chain-like hair cutting place. Save some money and get it done right! Ask the stylist to show you how to use the product, and ask about other products that they stylist might know about. That's their job, they're supposed to know about this stuff, right?!

Several ppl here are saying a straightener. I do NOT recommend those. I was a stylist for years and those products use a really caustic chemical called lye that will strip the protien and life right out of your hair. The term "fried" is not used lightly when ppl talk about straightening products. The hair looks like it was cooked in bacon grease! Before you go to that extreme, I'd say learn to love the hair you have! Again, a great style can make ALL the difference.

If this doesn't give you the look you want, I recommend a really short hair cut! And hats. Lots of hats. LOL

Good luck.

I use mousse and a very mousturising conditioner. Gel is too hard and hair spray is sticky. If you have a short style, styling clay or wax can be very good.
