Hey Pusspussgeroux,

Yes, I've thought about that too...like in the word mother, the use of the syllable "ma", to designate a grandma, is common to several languages. I think Freud made some comments on that, too.

In Turkish;

Büyükanne can be used for both paternal and maternal grandma. But more commonly, anneanne and babaanne are used for maternal grandma and paternal grandma respectively.

"anne" means mother and "baba" means father in Turkish.
