I have allot of health problems and recently a friend told me she thinks I have lupus but it is very hard to get diagnosed. (It took ten years for her to get a doctor to take her seriously) Do you have any tips on who to see?

Some symptoms of lupus are a rash across your face, chest pain with breathing, extreme fatigue, unusual hair loss, and sensitivity to the sun. If you have any of those symptoms, you should keep track of them, and then show it to a doctor. The doctor will do a complete body examine, probably take samples of your blood and urine, and he might do some surgery to take tissue samples. If your doctor isn't specialized in that, I suggest seeing a doctor who is experienced with diseases like that. Your doctor might give you some reccomendations on who to go to.

Lupus is not difficult to diagnose but not so common as your friend seems to suggest. A typical lesion of lupus is the butterfly (a reddened area over the face in a rough butterfly shape). A simple lab test called LE prep should be enough. First before dashing off to a hematologist, have your own physician do a physical exam with a CBC (Complete Blood Count) an LE prep and if the physician agrees or disagrees, then go to a hematologist for your peace of mind. Out of thousands of patients I have seen only six cases of Lupus.

The best doctor is the one that understands your body. I have had lupus for over 12 years now. I go to a family physician. I have a friend who go to a Rhumetologist and a Internal Specilast.
