Yes, they are called Garments. They are worn by members of the Mormon Church who have gone through the temple. You can only go through their temple with a temple recommend from a Bishop. These garments are worn by ALL members of the church if they have gone through the temple not just the members in Salt Lake City as stated by another person who answered this question. All Missionary's wear them, and if you have been married in the temple.
The reason they wear these garments, is that they believe that when the end of times come and the earth burns, that this will protect them. I was a member of this religion, it is a pretty weird religion, that's all I have to say about it.

It's true :
"A Mormon will begin to wear this underwear as part of the initiatory ordinances of the Mormon temple ceremony. It is here that they will first put on this underwear and promise to wear it the rest of their life. It is symbolic of a covenant made with God, and the reverence that is shown in wearing these garments is evidence of the reverence toward the covenant made. Part of this reverence is not discussing the particulars of the temple ceremony outside of the temple where it may be (and is) taken lightly. This has brought about the incorrect assumption that the Mormon temple is “secret.” The Mormon missionary effort is evidence that Mormons desire everyone to believe and participate in temple worship, there is nothing secretive about it, but the temple is preserved as a sacred space separated from the profane world."
We're all nuts.

Yes I have heard of them. Wasn't sure why, so I searched - Pulled this up on the web.............
The word "undergarment" or just "garment" has a distinctive meaning to Latter-day Saints. The white undergarment worn by those members who have received the ordinance of the temple Endowment is a ceremonial one. All adults who enter the temple are required to wear it. In mormon temples, men and women who receive priesthood ordinances wear this undergarment and other priestly robes. The garment is worn at all times, but the robes are worn only in the temple. Having made covenants of righteousness, the members wear the garment under their regular clothing for the rest of their lives, day and night, partially to remind them of the sacred covenants they have made with God.
The white garment symbolizes purity and helps assure modesty, respect for the attributes of God, and, to the degree it is honored, a token of what Paul regarded as taking upon one the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:13; cf. D&C 27:15). It is an outward expression of an inward covenant, and symbolizes Christlike attributes in one's mission in life. Garments bear several simple marks of orientation toward the gospel principles of obedience, truth, life, and discipleship in Christ.
An agency of the Church manufactures these garments in contemporary, comfortable, and lightweight fabrics. They are available for purchase through Church distribution centers

In some denominations of Mormonism, the temple garment (or the Garment of the Holy Priesthood or informally, the garment or garments) is a set of sacred underclothing worn by adult male and female Latter Day Saints who have taken part in the washing and anointing ordinance (ritual ceremony), usually in a temple as part of the Endowment ceremony. In modern times, the temple garment is worn primarily by members of the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and some of its offshoots.
The garment is thought to symbolize the "coats of skins" which Jehovah (Yahweh) made for Adam and Eve before casting them out of the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:21). It is worn, in part, to remind adherents that they have made special oaths and covenants to God. Members of the LDS Church today are commonly clothed in the garments, together with outer temple clothing, for burial. The garment is believed to be a spiritual "shield and protection" against the powers of evil (and sometimes against physical harm, according to some Latter-day Saints).

The LDS garments are not worn to 'protect us'. They are worn as a reminder of our covenants with God made in His sacred temple after we have had our endowments.
In addition, they are specifically the length they are, as well, to keep us modest. In this day in age it's particularly hard to remain modest, and they constitute a solid guideline for where we should be clothed. IE; Midriff, Arms(Up to the shoulder), Legs(Just above the knee) etc..

LDS undergarments are not to "protect us from other people." They are an outward sign of an inward commitment. In Jesus Christ's day, He and the Apostles wore garments under their clothing as a sign of faith. As these garments represent covenants we have made in the temple and to God, they are very sacred to us... not secret. To learn more, visit www.lds.org

My sister and her family are Mormon also. I believe they are just called "garments". I think that they are blessed, and special to help protect them. Sorry if that's not the answer you're looking for.

Look, I am LDS, I know about them, and it really is something to remind us of the promises we make to keep the commandments and live the gospel of Jesus Christ. They're not "magic" it's more about spiritual protection by serving as a daily reminder of Christ and His atonement.
But really hon, you shouldn't be afraid to ask your aunt about this. It's really not a big deal, and I'm sure she's been asked about it before, and she can probably answer all your questions much better than anyone here on yahoo answers.
best wishes
