The information I have says it is a purely mental condition, born out of the response to witnessing and participating in combat.

The information I have comes from Endurance Techniques (SAS Training manual). I am asking as I was curious regarding the "shell shock" syndrome which occurred in WW1, in particular at the battle of the Somme.

No I don't sweety but I think of all you fellas and gals all the time and pray for you...I imagine the stresses are much like post trauma stress where it hits you when you least expect it and in various ways, both emotional and physical.

I think the solution for healing is knowing that matters in this world are often beyond our own control and that we do what we must to survive under those conditions...even God says you should protect yourself in self defense....so forgive yourselves for what humanity is under the circumstances of war, and know that somehow in the end God will make it all right. I know it's hard to put away those demons but let your emotions out...it's the only way to heal.

Although it is a mental reaction, it manifests in physical ways...primarily as anxiety attacks and depression. It can be quite severe and can be treated with medication. It is something that needs to be discussed with a physician, hopefully one that has some experience with patients who have had it.
