The Civil War was the most expensive in terms of how much we spent on it and how many American lives were lost.

The American Civil War caused the death of three times as many Americans as any other war, and more than all of the other wars combined. Being fought on American soil it naturally caused more damage to American property than any other war. That a war had to be fought to end slavery also shows that up until that point America was without question not at its pinnacle of moral standing (regardless of where people believe the US is today)(It's hard to say it was fought for the right reasons when both sides were Americans).

Loss of life: Civil War.
Damage to Constitution: Civil War.
Lasting stigma on society: Civil War.
Wrong reasons: Civil War (the Southern states had every right to secede, the Civil War brought in the modern concept of Federalism).
The Civil War wins hands down as the worst war in American history.

No war is any worse than any other. War is unnecessary, evil, unproductive, and immoral. So-called peace-loving pilgrims came to this country to escape oppression and persecution in Europe. But they thought nothing of fighting with native North Americans to steal their land, slaughter their buffalo, and rape their women.
Then we fought the British for our independence.
And we fought a Civil War because we couldn't agree on whether the black slaves we brought to this country were people or property.
We involved ourselves in two World Wars.
Since then, taxpayers have generously supported the military-industrial complex by engaging in 'conflicts' in Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Iraq, and other "hot spots" around the globe. While none of those wars brought peace (which is always the twisted, yet ultimate objective of war) it certainly made companies like Boeing, McDonnell-Douglas and Halliburton extremely, obscenely profitable.
If there is a "worst" war, it has to be the illegal, unconstitutional skirmish we're currently involved in, all because George Bush has a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein and Dick Cheney wants all of Iraq's OIL.
Coming soon to a battleground near you: the 2007 war in Iran. For the very same reason: those two cocky oilmen in the Oval Office want all of Iran's OIL so their buddies at Exxon-Mobil can get richer and richer and richer. -RKO-

One choice would be the war between the States. Infighting in a country is always tragic, though it did end slavery. Another could be the systematic wiping out of Native populations. Trade relations and the joint exploration of resources would have been more civilized, but perhaps too advanced for those times. And there is Vietnam, fought because of a perceived domino effect, that the end of the Cold War, showed misguided.

I think your worst war will be the war on terror because your going to lose life's and materiel's but most important you are going to lose the rights and democracy that your fore fathers fought for in the previous wars. What is worse is your going to give them away "temporarily" and never be able to get them back because a people gutless enough to give their rights away in the first place will never get the backbone to fight for their return. You'll let somebody convince you that you really don't need them any way and the USA will disappear as a democracy and something will arise that George Washington would fight to change.
