The original intent of putting a wedge of lime in a Corona bottle was for the purpose of using it to disinfect the rim of the bottle. Another popular explaination for this tradition is that coating the rim of the bottle with a lime kept flies from landing on it, which is undesirable for patrons.
It is common in Europe, the United States and Canada for Corona to be served with a slice of lime in the neck. This practice is less common in Mexico itself, outside of areas frequented by tourists. However, beer-lime combinations such as the Chelada and the Michelada are popular in Mexico.

First of all, if they serve it with a lemon, send it back. It should be a lime. Secondly, it's a bit of a mystery how a wedge of lime became standard equipment with Mexican beer. I've read that it's a Mexican tradition originating in the need to clean dust off - or keep flies out - of the mouth of the can or in this case a bottle. I've also read that it started as a marketing gimmick, and only tourists in Mexico drink their beer with lime. Card-carrying Beer Snobs will tell you the lime is necessary to give the beer some flavor. Personally, I drink it with lime - probably because that's how I learned to like it, and because its lighter flavor pairs nicely with the fresh acidity of the citrus. But it doesn't need it. Good luck!

It greatly improves the inferior taste of Corona, which is primarily a frat-boy beer. What I don't understand is why some people put lemon slices in a perfectly good hefeweizen.

First of all, and primarily it is a Mexican tradition. The reason is to take the bitterness out of the beer and give it a better flavor. In the dirt floor bars of the real Mexico, you usually get your beer in a "Ballena' or "Kawama", which is a 1.5 liter bottle. Along with it you get a tray with "limon" slices and plastic cups. Often salt accompanies the round of drinks, which many add to the beer also. Kind of like low budget Margaritas.

Bar fruit in beer is to hide something in the beer. This is why good brewers are offended if someone serves fruit with their beer.
It's also a marketing gimmick. It makes you feel like you are part of a ritual or that you are 'in the know'.

It lightens up the taste a bit. Disguises the skunk taste. My advice, stay away from beers in clear bottles.
