How many Irish here can people can speak their native language fluently?
I spent 8 years in primary school, 5 years in Secondary, and aced the Irish Leaving Cert...but I still can't have even the most basic conversation with someone speaking in Irish...
How bad is that?
I'm not alone though, most of my friends and family are the same...
How is it possible that so many people fail to grasp the language when it has been a constant subject throughout their primary and secondary education?

Hmm I'm irish , but I live in the U.S. I am learning french and I can have conversations, in fact I have to do 8 conversations a year to pass, I think it was like my great grandfather or something like that who's french, I started learning french in 6th grade, and I'm in 9th now, I think it's pretty easy so far, I want to do a abroad program in collage and go to France like my mom did. I kind of ended up off the subject, I dont know how you still cant grasp it very well, maybe because you have been learning it for so long you just didn't pay attention because you thought "well I've been learning it for a long time so it will be easy" That's the only thing I can think of, becuase I think that sometimes.

The Irish language seams to be taught as a language that glorifies servile agricultural peasants that are immersed in Catholicism and the woes of the past ,out of step with a modern society.
