sheriff deputy reported false/defamating information to my employer which resulted in dismissal from state employment.

Contact the local bar association, they should be able to give you a list of attorneys in your area. We can't answer this question, we don't konw where you live. Try to find a recommended lawyer in your area. There won't be on that sqecializes in "defamation cases with local sheriffs", that is way too specific an area. You probably are looking for a general civil attorney.

I agree with another poster. Contact the local bar association and get a referral. Ask for specific experience or expertise in working with a particular county government. A former insider works the best. Be prepared to present your evidence as the burden is on you.

I would also file a IA complaint against the Deputy to get the ball rolling.

You should thank him, now you don't have to pay taxes so they can give them back to you as salary.
