Paxil has changed my life so much for the better. If your doctor is recommending it, don't be afraid to try it. Be sure that you have frequent doctor's appointments after you start taking it to be sure that you are getting the right dosage because it takes a many weeks (8-10) to really get use to it and make sure you get the benefits without feeling totally 'drugged out'. It's so important to have a doctor that will really follow your use of this drug and not just write a prescription and expect you to figure it out.
I'm so happy that I've found Paxil - it's made my life much better and easier.

Its hard to give advice on any kind of mental health related medication because everyone reacts differently. I had great success with Wellbutrin but it took me about 4 meds to find what works. Other people I know had a horrible experience with Wellbutrin. I was on Paxil - didn't really help - but thats just me. The only thing I do know is that with these meds it takes a month or more to find out if it is helping.

My doctor prescribed this for me to help me stop smoking because my insurance wouldn't cover the normal quit smoking drug. He informed me that Paxil helps with Obsessive / Compulsive Disorder, and if you're a smoker you got it! :-)
I really couldn't tell any difference exept I had a really odd reaction when my elderly aunt died. We were very close, as she was my only living relative since I was 21 (when my mother died).
In the past, I've taken death *very* hard (too hard?) when someone close to me died. My mother died suddenly and I was practically hysterical. Cried for a year. Before that, I had a cat that died - and I almost literally saw my mother as a monster because she'd sent me away to camp while this kitty was sick.
Ditto for other deaths, my dog, etc.
But when my aunt died, I was on Paxil, and although I was grief stricken, I was most seriously calm and not so upset. Since then I refered to Paxil as my "happy" pills.
And oh yeah, I did quit smoking. Went back to it, but trying again.

It made me completely apathetic, and that is a known side effect that is hard to be congnizant of. Nothing made me even the least bit upset, even when I knew it would be appropriate to show a level of irritation I tried faking it but would almost laugh at myself. I got nothing done for six months while on that stuff. It labotimized me chemically I think.

Screaming nightmares 3 or 4 times a night, for months.
This was the first drug my doctor had me try after I was first diagnosed with chronic pain, because it was decided (by my doctor -- he wouldn't discuss the medication with me at all beforehand) that it would help me sleep better...

It is another drug in the arsenal to try if someone is depressed, obsessive, or anxious in public. I take it along with a bunch of antidepressants so it helps but for me wasn't enough.
