was cousins called brothers then or was james really his brother

Bible doesn't say. However the historian Josephus spoke of a certain James the brother of Jesus who was sent up before the Sanhedrin for transgressing the law and was stoned along with others. The James in Acts Chap. 12 is not the brother of Jesus. That James is the brother of John.

Jesus had no siblings. I think James may have been a cousin. In those times, the word brother was used to refer to lots of different family members, like your cousin, uncle, brother-in-law, and so forth. Today we use it to refer to our actual sibling brother, but back then it was a very broad term. A lot of people confuse this thinking Jesus had siblings.
