place wire screens in the chimney, or gutters or openings inbetween the roof and the ceiling

Finding out how they are getting in is a necessary first step. Then you need to fix some kind of one-way vent to the "opening" so more bats can't get in but any already in can get out. Then you have to seal up the opening. And you have to get in to where they were to clean up the bat guano. The best thing to do is contact a pest control professional, if you can find one specialising in bats, so much the better. If they don't clean up the guano, they can probably recommend someone who does - take them up on it, with all the bacteria and stuff it contains, it is considered "toxic waste".

Bats will get through the tiniest crack. If you have a fireplace and no screen or covering on the top, they will come through there. Our pest control folks take care of our house and check for holes and cracks in the attic several times yearly.
