The first time I went into a restaurant up north and ordered tea they brought me a cup of hot tea! I was all like wtf is this...lol I think just another one of those cultural differences that make it so fun to go other places.

I've never lived south of Jersey. In this area of the country, you can order sweetened tea, which will get you a nestea, lipton, snapple, etc out of a bottle with high fructose corn syrup and artificial stuff. Or you can order an unsweetened iced tea and just get a glass of cold tea to which you add sugar to suit your taste. I've heard of Sweet Tea (thanks to Paula Deen) but never granny tea.
Food Network recently ran a special with Alton Brown called "Feasting on Asphalt" where he traveled across the country in a month. Regional food differences really are amazing and fun- I guess that's 1/2 the reason why many people like to travel.

Its not that we don't know about it, its that most people, at least in the Northwest drink mainly coffee. Tea just isn't as popular. I lived in a few different southern states and it would have been like someone walking up to me and asking where they could get an Americano.

Up north they often drink iced coffee instead of iced tea, which used to be (before Starbucks, etc) unheard of in the south. You can order it in just about any restaurant.
The coffee in New England is delicious! We took a trip to Cape Cod and all around last summer, and I drank lots of coffee.
I grew up in the south, and also grew up drinking iced coffee, which all my friends thought was gross! My mother never made sweet tea. We had iced tea, but we sweetened it ourselves, which was also unheard of among my friends! LOL!
Don't ask me where my mother got those northern notions...she was born and raised in Alabama.

Maybe it was due to the climates between north and south. (yes, I know it does get hot up there too)
I think maybe the summers up there used to be a lot shorter than they are now and not as hot. (Global Warming) Habit and tradition. It just never changed.
Our summers here last anywhere from April til November (Alabama) Why the heck we would want anything hot to drink here most months is beyond me.
