The way that works best for me is to use one of my favorite Bible verses - John 14:27 - personalizing it.

Peace I leave with you
My peace I give unto you.
Not as the world giveth
Give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled
Neither be afraid.

I usually repeat it about 3 times but on the
3rd repetition I say
I will not let my heart be troubled
Neither will I be afraid.

That helps me to clear my thoughts so that I
can go onto doing what I need to do.

May God bless you in your overcoming!

It is very difficult to control your thoughts, especially the "unwanted" thought that pops in your mind all the time. Everyone experiences it but the magnitude of such occurance varies between people. Some have less poping thoughts, some have more.

Almost all of the people on earth live to the end of their life without confronting this problem; however the handful of people that did figure out how to control or at least tune it down leads a more productive and peaceful lives than the rest.

A common way to help to stop your racing mind is to have more physical exercise, such as jogging, swimming or playing sports. When you are reacting to a situation (which is common in any sporting activities), the mind focus on the current events and the unwanted thought naturally stops.

By exercise regularly, you should get into the habit of focusing your mind and tone down the unwanted thought popping in your head.

A more advance method to reach such serenity is meditation or Zen practice, you basically sits down and just relax. Usually you would feel bore and falls asleep, and your thought would bombard you without mercy. But as time goes it would all disappear, it just take time and patience. Start with just 3-5 minutes and slowly increase your time as you go along. You should feel frustrated by so much thought and boredom in the beginning, but if you stick it out it should all go away.

By applying any of these practices regularly (3-4 times a week, or every day for meditation), it should help you achieving what you are looking for.

Just understand that getting rid of unwanted thought is not easy, its almost like fighting with an enemy and needs your full attention when you do it. So have patience and give it time as you try these things out.

Many Eastern practices such as Buddhism have foundamental method of reaching a serenity state of mind, so that would be the direction for you to look into if you are interest in other method.

Hope this helps.

The human mind can only concentrate on 1 thing for about 6 seconds! Thats shocking i know... you cant prevent unwanted thoughts, you can mangage them and eventually they diminish in time. It could be that the unwanted thoughts are coming from something that is bugging you which means you need to deal with it.

when i studied in college i would play some relaxing but upbeat music, like alicia keys to study too. it made studying for me more fun and it prevented me from thinking about other things cause i was to busy reading or singing. never watch tv while studying and studying in the library with silence around made my mind wonder. i found studying in not too loud but not silence places kept me on track.

I think you're experiencing the phenomena of "creativity". I would say just start wanting those thoughts and working with them rather than fighting them. Your studies might even improve if you learn to accept how your mind works rather than trying to change it.

Eww. Good question! I have the same problem and start wondering if I'm possesed or not. Pray!! It works for me. At work my mind wonders and I think about some horrendous stuff. And I think to myself where does it all come from?

When the unwanted thoughts come, try to think about something else. It sounds to me like you may have OCD.

WE CAN ONLY DIVERT THE MIND AND CANT CONTROL IT.
WHEN EVER YOU COME ACROSS BAD OR UNWANTED THOUGHTS ,DO THINGS YOU LIKE MOST, LIKE LISTENING TO MUSIC WHICH UPLIFTS YOU, ARE PLAYING ANY GAME OR SPORT OF YOUR CHOICE.
BAD THOUGHTS ALWAYS COMES TO EVERYBODY DUE TO PAST LIFE samskaras (ACTIONS -HABITS).
IT IS FAR MORE EASIER TO CONTROL THE MIND THROUGH SPIRITUAL PRACTISES LIKE MEDITATION,SINGING GLORIES OF THE CHOSEN LORD OR IF YOU ARE HINDU BY CHANTING VEDA OR MANTRAS.
TRY THESE THINGS DEFINITELY YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE MIND.
