Just make sure the base is wide, so it doesn't fall over.

You don't have to measure anything - it's a scratching post!

My boss and I built one for his 3 cats and we used a peice of 4x4 post for the center and just went crazy. We added to it here and there but we added with bolts and wing nuts so he could change it up every once in a while. The thing took up a whole corner of his living room and he would change arms and such every few weeks and move the hanging tunnels around so it was always "New" to the cats and they loved it. We covered it all in carpet to match the living room because his wife said we had to but it took us the btter part of a day and it was pretty Kool! I think he spent about $60 on it. Just use your imagination and make sure the base is wide enough to support the cats and if possible make it reach the ceiling this way you have one post, the central one, that is anchored and secure.

My husband and I looked on the net for a picture of a cat tree that we liked. Then he drew up his own plans by just deciding how big we wanted it. It's not the hard. If you know someone that is really handing in that kind of work, they might be able to help you. It just takes some ply wood, two by fours, screws, and some carpet. It is defiantly cheaper to make your own then to buy one. We have actually made two in the years that we have had our cats. Here is a website that I found that you can download plans. Good luck! www.cat-furniture-plans.com

My cats don't use a scratching post, but all 4 like these cardboard scratch boxes that have catnip in them...

I got it at my petsmart, but you can probably make one... my cats love it (the catnip) and they last for like 3-6 months with 4 cats using it...
