According to the child's tale, the spots are to number the naughty things the dogs did as a pup.

I didn't know it until now but, the Dalmatian is the only known animal to be born pure white, the spots appearing some 10 to 14 days later.

There are mentions of the coat being a camouflage in sandy/pebbly areas and being useful to identify them from other dogs for firehouse horses. I believe they are bred to keep their spots as was mentioned in other answers.

In traditional logic (also called Aristotelian logic, after Aristotle) it means the following - that dalmations have spots - that it is a part of their essence, that spottedness is something that dalmations have by their nature. Even if you found a dalmation which was unspotted (like an albino), that would be an exception, but still it would be a dalmation.

Other then that I do not know. Alot of dogs have spots- like rat terriers- but that dosnt mean they are dalmations.

because when the breed was being developed ages and ages ago a pup would of turned up with a natural mutation (in this case it had some spots) and people liked it so that dog was bred from so produced more spoted dogs. its called selective breeding.
